On Going Campaign “Support a Special Needs Cat”

This March Nine Lives we celebrated 11 years as a, non-profit, all volunteer, and no kill feline shelter and refuge.

At Nine Lives we see this as a celebration of more than 11 years of success stories. We are lucky enough to be able to claim well over eighteen hundred Happy Endings, however, being a no-kill shelter we also have had more than our share of challenges and on going special need circumstances. Over the years, we have come across many animals that due to medical or emotional issues, have little chance of ever finding a “Forever Home”. At the present time, we are caregivers to 17 Special Needs cats. These are our feline friends that have heart conditions that are progressive, diabetes, neurological problems, birth defects, contracted diseases; such as FIV, or emotional issues.

Fortunately not all of them are housed at the shelter, because if they were, we would have very little space for our healthy cats. Many of these Special Needs Cats are in the homes of some of our caring volunteers. These are people, who take them home to monitor their care, and lovingly accept them as part of their family.

We are very lucky to work with some wonderful Animal Hospitals in the area; that care for our felines at discounted fees, which helps to alleviate some of our medical expenses. This love and attention enables our feline residents to enjoy as good a quality of life as they can within the limits of their medical issues.

However, between the cost of our regular medical care given to all our new arrivals, and the on going cost of our Special Cats, our medical bills always run well over a thousand dollars each month. In order to off set some of our medical costs, and to honor our 11th year, in the month of March, we launched our “Support a Special Needs Cat” campaign. Wherever you see our golden cats, you can purchase one for a dollar, and that dollar will go directly to the care of one of our “Special” kitties.

We hope that the community will help out, as always, to make our new campaign a success.
